Sochi To Construct Waste Plant Ahead Of 2014 Winter Games

A new 30 million Euro waste processing plant which will employ a “complex” system to recycle household waste, the first of its kind in Russia when completed in 2010, will enable visitors to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to have a “comfortable environment and will also create favourable living conditions in the region for future generations”, according to Sochi 2014 President and CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko.

As part of the process a 70 metre stretch of pipe from the old Sochi waste burning plant was decommissioned Monday by a controlled explosion.

The plant will not only recycle 240 tons of waste a year, more than double the existing waste burning plant, but it will also categorize all waste to ensure the most effective recycling possible, said a press release.

The manufacturer of the plant reportedly undertook a similar project ahead of the Turin 2006 Games before collaborating with Sochi 2014, demonstrating knowledge sharing that takes place between Organizing Committees.

Chernyshenko said, “Sochi 2014 is committed to an environmental policy that will not only protect, but also enhance the overall environment of the region. The new waste processing plant in Sochi is already under construction. This is a very important urban infrastructure development that is a direct result of Sochi hosting the 2014 Winter Games”.
