Sochi Russia To Submit Application For 2014 Winter Games

Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi will submit an application to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Tuesday to bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The executive board of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) voted unanimously on a 2014 bid.

ROC president Leonid Tyagachyov said, “this is not a dead project. We have government guarantees; we have great support from local officials and the people of Sochi. So I think this could be the start of something great. We just need to get to work right away and not waste any time”.

Boris Gryzlov, Chairman of the State Duma (parliament’s lower chamber) said of Sochi’s bid, “I support the initiative and believe most Russians think the same way”. He said Russia has been one of the leaders of the Olympic movement and its achievements and contribution to sports have been an integral part of the world sports community.

The vote on the 2014 host city takes place in 2007.
