Sochi 2014 says it wants to clarify recent media reports on the increase in costs associated with staging the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The organizing committee released an official statement Tuesday saying, “there is absolutely no increase in the operating costs to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014. This remains precisely the same as the $1.5 billion outlined in the Sochi 2014 Candidature file presented to the IOC early in 2007.
“Any reference by the Audit Chamber to an increase in spending will refer to the overall development of the infrastructure of the whole Krasnodar Region. Whilst these projects will enhance the Games-time experience, they are not Olympic related costs as they are long term projects for the regeneration of the region into a year-round resort destination”.
