Sochi 2014 bid CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko and Ice Hockey Champion Vyacheslav Fetisov, who is also chairman of the Federal Agency for Physical Training and Sports, presented Sochi’s plans for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games at the IIHF World Championship at Moscow’s Khodynka Ice Palace on the weekend.
Fetisov highlighted Russia’s past success in delivering large scale construction projects on time and on budget as proof of Sochi’s capability to deliver successful Games and underlined the extent of Russia’s experience at hosting major international events, including four winter sport World Championships in the last three years and more than 100 international championships in the last 25 years.
Chernyshenko presented the bid’s compact plan to build 11 brand-new winter sport venues in two clusters forty minutes apart, including the plans for an innovative Olympic Park, the first in Winter Games history. He focused on Sochi’s legacy to the future of winter sport in Russia and the impact of the Games on Russian society, citing increased awareness of people with disabilities and a strong commitment to the environment, and the positive outcome of hosting the Games in Sochi.
