Sochi has been busily promoting its bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games ahead of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission’s visit to the city later this month.
Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko is in Are Sweden at the Alpine World Ski Championships to gain “invaluable best practices from the events organizers” and to meet FIS President Gian Franco Kasper to discuss Sochi’s Alpine blueprint.
According to Sochi 2014 the bid includes the construction of a new alpine ski venue to host all alpine disciplines capable of welcoming 18,000 spectators.
Sochi 2014 is also one of the sponsors of the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup taking place in Moscow this weekend. More than 150 athletes from 16 countries are participating in the event to be attended by more than 15,000 spectators.
Andrey Bokarev, President of the Russian Alpine Ski and Snowboard Federation, attended the opening ceremony Friday. He said, “the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup is an important event that highlights Russia’s ability to host large-scale international sports events in accordance with the world’s highest standards. The Snowboard World Cup in Moscow is a great step toward demonstrating Russia’s potential for hosting the world’s top athletes at the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, should Sochi be selected as Host City”.
Sochi 2014 says the ski season is in full swing in Krasnaya Polyana, the venue hosting alpine sport competitions should Sochi host the 2014 Winter Games. Winter sport enthusiasts are “enjoying ideal temperatures and winter conditions throughout the region during the exact period proposed by Russia’s bid to welcome the world in 2014”.
The area is one of the few skiing destinations largely untouched by the unusually warm temperatures that swept across Europe this winter affecting many of the continents leading ski resorts, says Sochi 2014. They say the proposed alpine site of Sochi 2014 has enjoyed continuous snowfall and many ski routes are already covered in more than eight feet of powdery snow.
