Sochi 2014 opened a two-day Biodiversity Forum Wednesday in Sochi called “A Step to Sustainable Development”. According to Sochi 2014 the forum, being held May 23 and 24, is set to continue the dialogue begun with the establishment of the Ecological Council last February, and highlight Sochi’s effort towards the preservation of biodiversity in the region.
The forum will consist of roundtable discussions and field trips, focusing on various Sochi 2014 projects, including the Zero Waste Goal project, the Carbon Neutral Goal projects, and the Sustainable Water Management project.
There will be speakers at the forum from the Russian Government and NGOs.
Discussions will include such measures as the creation of nurseries for endangered North Caucasus plant and animal species, an extension of the Sochi National Park territory, and the recreation of an Educational and Scientific Center for Ecology.
Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko said, “we have come a long way in the last several months as we opened a constructive dialogue through the Ecological Council on how to best develop Sochi in the most sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. The biodiversity forum in Sochi will take this effort one step further, uniting the leading environmental actors from our country with members of the Russian Government, in order to discuss new ways in which to preserve the unique and rare beauty of Sochi”.
