Gulf News reports that Sochi 2014 says it has learned from the Vancouver 2010 Games and has a Plan B in place for the Winter Olympic Games
Dmitry Chernyshenko, President and CEO of Sochi 2014, told a group of journalists on the last day of the SportAccord Convention in Dubai Wednesday, “we have learnt from what happened in Vancouver this year and we have ensured we have a Plan B in place during the course of the Winter Games”.
Chernyshenko said that the de-briefing for the Vancouver Games in early June will be crucial for them. He jokingly said, “we’ve learnt a lot from the situations that affected Vancouver. For the firs time in 126 years there was summer during the Winter Games”, referring to the lack of snow due to climate change.
He added, “these are serious issues for the world at large, but we have placed a Plan B and that includes storing considerable amounts of snow at least a year in advance should we be faced with a similar situation as Vancouver did this year. We will also protect the slopes and manage the venue in a better way in a lead up to the Games”.
Chernyshenko said everything was on track for construction to begin possibly by August this year. “the aim is to have the venues ready and running by the end of 2012 so that there is adequate time to do testing”.
