Sochi 2014 Flag Sits On Europe’s Highest Peak

To boost Sochi’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games a team of Sochi mountain climbers scaled 5,621 metres above sea level to place the Sochi 2014 flag atop Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak.

The climb was part of the “Kuban Students Alpiniad – 2006”. About seventy athletes from all over Russia, including the Ukraine and Belarus, took part in the yearly event, held to attract Russian tourists and alpinists.

Mount Elbrus is located in the south of Russia about 500 km from Sochi. Its peak, at 5,621 metres above seal level, is 810 metres higher than Frances famous Mont Blanc.
