A Sochi 2014 flag now flies over the highest Greek mountain – Mount Olympus. It was placed there by the Eurasia 2007 expedition in support of Sochi’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Konstantin Merzhoyev, leader of the expedition, told Itar-Tass Tuesday, “the flag has been hoisted at the height of 2,917 metres next to the flag of the Krasnodar territory.
The Eurasia 2007 bicycle tour began in mid March at the extreme western point of Europe – Cape Cabo da Roga in Portugal, and passed through former Olympic host cities in Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy Slovenia, Croatia, Greece and Russia.
Merzhoyev said, “while in Greece we not only collected signatures in support of the Winter Olympiad in Sochi but also took a handful of Olympic soil on Mount Olympus”.
The expedition is due to arrive in Sochi by ship May 14-15.
