Sochi 2014 Delegation To Study Ice Hockey Championship

A Sochi 2014 delegation arrived in Riga Latvia Friday to study the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship in hopes of using the experience in its bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The delegation is headed by Vyacheslav Fetisov, Minister of Sports and includes Dmitry Chernyshenko, CEO of Sochi 2014, and Elena Anikina, Chairwoman of the Sochi 2014 bid committee board.

The group will discuss their plans and hope to gain valuable insights from the IIHF experts should Sochi be selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Chernyshenko said, “we will use this trip to visit the competition venues, analyze the security needs and transport networks, inspect the accommodation capacities, and study urban planning, as well as its impact on the host city. Not only does the Tournament appear to be a great success, but we have observed several aspects that will help us in the preparation of our Candidature File.”

He added, “watching so many great teams compete here in Riga at the highest level is further incentive for Sochi to host the greatest winter sports event of all – the Olympic Winter Games”.
