Sochi 2014 Celebrates

In addition to a clock counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds to the Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony on February 7, 2014 unveiled Saturday, the reverse side of the clock marks the time to the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games which begin March 7, 2014.

There were celebrations in Russia Saturday 1000 days ahead of the 2014 Games. The main themes of the day were the environment, healthy living, education and culture.

The events included one thousand Olympic Lessons held at Moscow schools, a sports festival, a “Friendship between People” festival, the Anthem of Russia performed in Tomsk by 1000 musicians from three combined orchestras, several social initiatives for the elderly under the title of “1000 Smiles”, and a program called “1000 Children’s Drawings on Asphalt” where streets were decorated in brightly-coloured drawings created by children.

Environmental events and green initiatives were held in several cities where trees were planted alongside the Olympic avenues, and flower beds were arranged in the figure of 1,000.

Students from Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University climbed to the top of Mount Mashuk 1,000 metres high and cleared its slopes of litter. The students then began their ascent of the mountain from five different starting points – one for each of the Olympic rings. The Sochi 2014 flag was planted on the summit of the mountain.

Sochi 2014 Volunteer Centres were officially launched Saturday across Russia.

There were also gala concerts in Moscow and Sochi to celebrate the occasion.
