Bulgarian International Olympic Committee member (IOC) Ivan Slavkov, who was suspended following BBC allegations of corruption, is not going to Singapore in July for the IOC session reports Novinite.
Slavkov has already prepared and sent in writing his defence, which is expected to be reviewed by the IOC July 7, the last day of the session. He is not allowed to attend the session earlier because he’s been deprived of the right to cast a vote for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games host city.
A BBC documentary based on a year-long sting operation showed Slavkov meeting with an undercover reporter and discussing how IOC members could be influenced. Slavkov claims he knew it was a set-up and played along to expose what he thought was a real attempt to corrupt the process.
Novinite reports that Slavkov was cleared by the IOC ethics commission in May 2000 of charges he was involved in a scheme to sell votes in the bid for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, which Athens hosted.
