At a landmark first meeting of the Sochi 2014 Ecological Council a number of additional environmental initiatives were unanimously approved to become part of the Federal Target Programme (FTP) for the development of Sochi.
Additional initiatives include the development of a sustainable water management system and a renewable energy product, the creation of an Educational and Scientific Center for Ecology and a rehabilitation centre for wild animals, among others.
The whole package also includes three “unique” projects, according to Sochi 2014. They are a “Zero Waste Goal” project, a “Carbon Neutrality Goal” project, and a Comprehensive Monitoring System.
The “Zero Waste Goal” project will provide 100 per cent treatment of the solid and biological waste from the entire Sochi region; the “Carbon Neutral Goal” project is to be implemented by adopting energy conservation measures in all new construction; and the Comprehensive Monitoring System will be developed to ensure environmental control throughout construction, including on-site inspection and satellite observations, particularly for the Sochi National Park and adjoining territories.
