San Francisco 2016 is holding a press conference Monday afternoon where they will announce the status of San Francisco’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Over the weekend San Francisco 49ers owner John York removed any doubt about the team’s move to Santa Clara when he said Sunday morning they want to start playing in a new stadium by 2012.
The team released a statement Sunday saying they had worked with Lennar Corp and the City of San Francisco for a year to explore the feasibility of the stadium and during that time the team was asked by the City to assist its Olympic bid by making significant modifications to the team’s stadium design.
According to the press release the 49ers said they were happy to work on the design modifications challenges, but made it clear both verbally and in writing that the City and its Olympic Bid Committee should not base its entire bid on a development concept that was still in the analysis stage and may not prove viable.
To mitigate these concerns the team said it also worked with the City and its Olympic venue consultants to develop alternatives to safeguard the City’s bid in the event that the team’s plans at Candlestick Point did not move forward.
Once it was determined that the Candlestick Point concept would not deliver the optimal game day experience it is seeking, the 49ers announced they would not move forward with the public approval process and publicly offered to continue to work with the City to explore holding Olympic events at its proposed new stadium in Santa Clara, said the press release.
