Reaction to Salzburg’s bid for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games was positive at first, but now it seems the bid is floundering.
The International Olympic Committee wants bid cities to have government support, but there seems to be dissention in the ranks, particularly from the federal government.
According to reports, Austria’s cabinet members are not particularly serious about the Olympic bid.
Also, as of now TV rights have only been secured until the 2008, and must be renegotiated for the 2010 Games.
Salzburg’s budget for the TV rights and the International Committee’s TOP sponsorship program is $250 million, compared to Salt Lake’s $738 million budget of which Salt Lake received $450 million with the rest going to the IOC.
TV negotiations might not start until 2004 and until then Salzburg is left in the dark about what its portion will be.
