Residents in the region of Salzburg, including the city of Salzburg, participated in one of two non-binding referendums, one of which was held Sunday, as to whether Salzburg should bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
In a low turn out of about 19 per cent in the region of Salzburg, including the people of the city of Salzburg, the vote was 60 per cent in favour of a bid for the 2014 Games.
The second non-binding referendum, being held from April 4 to April 9 for the city of Salzburg, was necessary because of a petition that was recently held.
Opponents were in the majority in Hallein (Tennengau) and Elsbethen (Flachgau), locations of two possible venues should Salzburg host the 2014 Games.
Leo Wallner, president of the Austrian Olympic Committee, said recently the higher the approval would be, the more trustworthy Salzburg’s bid would appear on the international stage.
