Salzburg is expanding one of the main venues in its Games plan. The Euro Stadium in Salzburg, which would host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies if Salzburg is awarded the 2014 Games, is undergoing a major expansion.
The stadium capacity will be expanded from 18,500 to 30,000 spectators. The first expansion work began in April and the 11-hour process to fit the 17,000 square metre stadium roof was completed last weekend.
The 20 million euros additional construction work will be completed in the summer of 2007 and the stadium will host three EURO 2008 matches in the summer of 2008.
Commenting on the expansion, Dr. Heinz Schaden, Mayor of Salzburg and head of the advisory board of Salzburg 2014, said, “we are delighted that the Euro Stadium expansion is progressing to plan. We are gaining some invaluable experiences from our involvement in Euro 2008, and if we are fortunate enough to be awarded the honour to stage the 2014 Winter Games, these will be put in good effect. It would be a great honour for everyone in Salzburg if the Euro Stadium were to host the 2014 Opening and Closing ceremonies”.
