Salzburg 2010 Bid Details

Although there was a delay in the release of Salzburg’s bid book to journalists, reports say that bid book documents show the Salzburg Winter Games would cost just over $900 million (U.S.) and $217 million (U.S.) is expected to be spent on building new facilities and refurbishing others.

A $23-million Olympic Village at Kitzbuhel would be built by private partners who would convert the facilities to a hotel after the Games.

Robert Kaspar, secretary-director for Salzburg 2010, said that the bid committee will place an athlete’s village between the biathlon and cross-county ski course. The temporary village would straddle both sides of the Enns River between the alpine venues.

Four facilities would have to be built, including a $25-million speed-skating oval, two $40-million arenas in Salzburg and Hallein and a $24-million curling rink at Kitzbuhel. Almost all of it would be funded by the private sector.

More than a third of the bid’s operating revenues would come from television rights shared by the IOC.

Salzburg says it expects to spend more than $113 million on running the sports venues and another $81 million on the media and international broadcast centre. The other large expense will be $228 million for technology, telecommunications and the Internet.

Security has been budgeted at $24 million and $107 million will be spent on administration.

A temporary 30,000-seat stadium is being planned for the opening and closing ceremonies which will straddle the Salzach River that runs through the middle of the city and would be built on pilings driven into the river.
