The U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and other government agencies have been testing security measures this week for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics.
They have been testing authorities’ responses to fire and medical emergencies, and the handling of large demonstrations and suspicious packages.
Federal agents also worked with officials on how to spot phony security credentials.
Olympic officials have been assembling and testing a security plan for three years, but their efforts have taken on urgency as the Games approach and anxiety has grown following the Sept. 11 attacks.
The plan includes measures to deal with bombings or kidnappings, as well as more mundane concerns – snow removal, transportation and equipping security officers.
The tests were closed to the public and will determine how well local, state and federal law enforcement and public safety officials work together in case there are any problem situations at the 2002 Games.
