Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Kozak, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation with responsibility for Sochi 2014, pledged to deliver the Sochi 2014 Winter Games to the highest international environmental standards.
Putin said at a meeting with Kozak and Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Yuri Trutnev, that Trutnev’s ministry should conduct ongoing monitoring of the environmental effects of Sochi 2014’s venue construction.
Later Kozak said the implementation of the policies will mean that in 2012, when all Sochi 2014 venues are constructed, the environment in the Krasnodar Region will have been significantly enhanced. According to a press release one of the initiatives central to the environmental protection will be the introduction of regulations to ensure that all investors obey environmental laws.
Measures already planned include requirements to use the latest, greenest technology in the development of Olympic venues.
Sochi 2014 will also implement Green Standards during Games-related construction, ensuring that environmentally friendly building materials, renewable energy sources, waste and pollution management and reduction systems are all used in Olympic preparation. It will also ensure that water and energy resources are efficiently used.
