The Associated Press reports that according to an Italian Olympic Committee statement Tuesday Rome’s chances to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games are slim because of a lack of political support.
The committee’s statement said, “the chances for a candidacy by Rome are facing” and that a meeting between its president Gianno Petrucci and Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni had failed to bring results.
Petrucci was quoted by Italian news agency ANSA saying “we still have a few days of hope but chances are fading. Veltroni has spoken the truth…you need the country to be united to take on an Olympic bid”.
Last month GamesBids.com reported that although the city had pulled out of the 2016 race Petrucci said he still believed Rome could end up presenting a bid in the near future.
Veltroni said at the time “if there is a positive solution the candidacy of Rome is ready”.
Milan withdrew its candidacy last month but was considering a bid to host the 2020 Summer Games if Rome failed in its efforts to bid for 2016.
