Rogge Wants More Women On IOC

In an interview with German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, called for more women to be elected to the IOC.

He said, “It’s a difficult fight and we need more women in the IOC. But that doesn’t happen overnight. I have asked the women’s commission to draw up new rules. I want a system whereby we can automatically nominate more women”.

In the interview Rogge admitted that he was nervous about the security risks at next month’s Salt Lake Winter Games.

He said, “the Americans are doing everything that is humanly possible. That said, you can only hope (that there will not be any problems). Munich 1972 will hopefully never happen again”.

He said, “Atlanta was bad, too. Three people died and that could not be avoided. I’m crossing my fingers, hoping that everything will go well. But I will be nervous until the closing ceremony”.

Rogge warned against exaggerating the influence of the IOC. “The IOC cannot bring peace to the world”, he said. “We can only be a symbolic voice, nothing more”
