Rogge Favours Golf In Olympics

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said there was interest in golf becoming an Olympic sport.

As reported by Agence France-Presse, Rogge told Sunday’s edition of the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, “I’ve had a meeting with those responsible for running golf. Everyone expressed an interest at seeing this sport at the Games.

“We’ve also discussed the calendar. That doesn’t pose a problem as golfers only need four days for their competition. So if they’re there for a week that’s sufficient”.

But some of the sports top competitors aren’t as excited about the idea. British Open champion Ernie Els has said he wasn’t interested, and Darren Clarke, a Northern Ireland player said “we travel around the world enough and the last thing we need is the Olympics”.

As for Formula One joining the Olympics Rogge said, “our rule means that the human factor is predominate. If we allow in Formula One how many countries could take part? Five, six? Sports in the Olympics should be able to be played by anyone, no matter where they come from”.
