Rogge And Bulgaria’s Prime Minister To Cooperate On Sofia 2014

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev wrote International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge saying he would work for Bulgaria’s success, pointing out that Bulgaria’s government and the state institutions will do everything possible for the organization of the Olympic Games and the spread of the ideals of the Olympic movement.

In replying to Stanishev Rogge expressed hopes for successful cooperation for Sofia 2014. He said, “we hope to continue our cooperation with the committee for Sofia 2014 bid and all institutions involved”.

Meanwhile former sport minister Vassil Ivanov, head of Bulgaria’s 2014 bid committee, said a lot of work needs to be done but Sofia can catch up with other candidates.

There are seven candidates bidding for the 2014 Winter Games. According to GamesBids.com’s BidIndex Sofia is in fifth place among the seven candidates.

Tuesday members of the bid committee discussed the need of additional measures and new strategy to promote Sofia’s application. Bulgaria’s Water and Environment Ministry needs to provide permission for the carrying out of competitions in Vitosha Mountain. It is unlikely for Vitosha to host Alpine skiing competitions, committee representatives said, as reported by the Sofia Echo.

Initial bid plans show that two winter resorts, Bansko and Borovets will host competitions alongside Sofia.
