Rio de Janeiro’s mayor Cesar Maia met Wednesday with 21 Municipal Secretaries and 26 city departments to prepare the dossier for Rio’s 2016 bid for the Summer Olympic Games. The dossier will be sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In a media release the Mayor said, “this mobilization is fundamental and demonstrates Rio de Janeiro’s full commitment in its bid to host the Olympic Games in 2016. All city government bodies are working diligently to meet all International Olympic Committee’s requirements”.
Mayor Maia instructed all city agencies to give priority to the Rio 2016 project-related actions, reaffirming that the Olympic bid is strategic for the city.
Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) who was at the meeting, emphasized the importance of the gathering that brought together the full cabinet of the city. He said, “the preparation of the dossier for any Olympic bid is something very complex and requires involvement by different areas. The City Government’s mobilization around Rio 2016 makes us sure that Rio de Janeiro is on the right track to deliver an excellent project to the IOC”.
The Brazilian Olympic Committee has taken on management of the Rio Velodrome, called the most modern in Latin America, which was built for the Rio 2007 Pan American Games.
Nuzman said, “this is an additional legacy from the Pan American Games and it will be invaluable for the Rio 2016 bid. By assuming the Velodrome and the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center management, the Brazilian Olympic Committee confirms the Rio 2016 bid project and its commitment to the development of the Olympic Movement”.
The BOC will promote courses, seminars, congresses and workshops in the sports area; training for athletes, coaches, referees and other professionals involved in the preparation and development of athletes; indoor cycling school for children; local, regional, national and international competitions, a fitness centre; sports-linked social activities; and sports and non-sports events in the Velodrome.
