Rio 2016’s Commercial and Marketing Director Maggie Sanchez has resigned. Rio 2016 Communications Director Carlos Villanova said Sanchez’ departure is attributed to an “incompatibility of philosophies between her and the rest of the team”.
Sanchez joined the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee in 2010.
Rio 2016 Chief Executive Leonardo Gryner will serve in her place until a replacement is found.
Meanwhile the organizing committee announced “the launch of the international contest to select a golf course design for the Rio 2016” Summer Games.
In order to take part companies will be required to provide evidence of golf course design experience, compliance with Rio 2016’s international rules, and to furnish proof of the qualifications necessary to develop the project. Consortiums of firms will be accepted. If the awarded participant is an individual international firm it will be required to have an office legally established in Rio de Janeiro.
Participants will be asked to design a project that meets International Golf Federation (IGF) specifications, is capable of becoming an international centre of excellence for the sport of golf for professional and community use as a legacy to Rio’s population, respects the environmental law in force and the local eco system, is capable of promoting Rio international, and constitutes an important tool for youth transformation through sport.
The 18-hole golf course for the men’s and women’s competition at the 2016 Games will be built at Reserva Marapendi, in Barra de Tijuca, where the largest number of Rio 2016 venues will be located.
