Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio da Silva said “Rio is prepared, Brazil is prepared” for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
USA Today reports the president was speaking at a slum Monday in Rio and said that the Olympics is “one more step in the esteem of the Brazilian people”.
The head of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) coordination commission for Rio 2016 said in January that the city was on track to deliver a “very good” Olympics.
As for those Brazilians who said the country was wasting money in its campaign to host the 2016 Games, Silva said Rio’s selection was extraordinary and done “despite the servile thinking from a portion of the Brazilian elite”.
