The Tourism and Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved the Pan American Games and the Rio’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games Wednesday at a presentation made by the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee of the Rio 2007 Pan American Games.
Deputy Jose Militao, president of the Commission said, “it was an important meeting for presenting these two projects, The Commission is supportive of sports and has pledged to promote Olympic sports in this country”.
Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of Brazil’s Olympic Committee said, “these are two projects that have a national character and thus the support of the members of parliament is fundamental to their success”.
He added, “Sports are the most important segment of the entertainment industry and in the last ten years have been growing globally each year at a rate of more than 10 per cent. Events like the Pan American Games and the Olympic Games create an enormous legacy in terms of cultural, economic, social and urban infrastructure”.
Brazil’s Olympic Committee and the city of Rio de Janeiro have budgeted about $2 billion U.S. with additional investment from municipal, state and federal infrastructure construction.
