Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce is to host a free road show to update businesses on Glasgow’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games on October 25, but a disturbing report in a Glasgow newspaper, the Evening Times, could generate more questions than answers during the road show.
According to the newspaper no community in Glasgow has escaped “the scourge of serious violence in the past year”.
Upmarket areas in Glasgow have been hit by crimes such as “sex attacks or indecency, robberies and serious assaults”, said the report and Glasgow’s city centre, in particular the area around Central Station, recorded the most. It’s an area where tourists attending the Commonwealth Games would frequent should Glasgow be the 2014 Winter Games host.
Detective Superintendent Colin Field said, “the majority of violent crime is carried out by a relatively small number of people. The majority of incidents where knives and weapons are used involve young men who fight with a rival gang. Alcohol is a contributory factor in many of these incidents, while in many instances perpetrators know their victim”.
He added, “however, we must not forget that on occasions innocent passers-by get caught up in violence” although he conceded those instances are relatively rare.
