Rail Link On Track For Toronto’s 2008 Bid

Twenty million dollars of the $500 million committed by the Canadian government to the revitalization of the Toronto waterfront will be used to kick-start public-private sector partnerships for a rail link between Union Station and Pearson airport.

Federal Transport Minister David Collenette said “my goal is to have a rapid transit link from Union Station into the new terminal in time for the new terminal’s opening in 2003-2004. Certainly for the Olympics in 2008; it will be up and running for a long time (before that)”.

Collenette said he was determined to make this happen and it was crucial for the Olympic bid.

The transport minister said the money will immediately go to the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) to pay for necessary structural changes at the new $4.4 billion terminal at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport to accommodate the rail line.
