Reuters reports that Qatar, host of this year’s Asian Games, plans to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
A Qatar National Olympic Committee official told Reuters, “we want to be one of the candidate cities for the 2016 Games. We have expressed our interest and we hope to be accepted”.
Qatar is hosting the 2006 Asian Games in December and has spent about $4 billion on infrastructure and sporting facilities for the two-week event.
The official said, “we have already built our infrastructure, and what we currently has is over and above the requirements for the Olympics. But we will know more on how well our bid is going by this time next year”.
According to Reuters no Arab country has hosted the Olympics.
