PyeongChang 2014 officials asked for support Wednesday from South Korea’s major business organizations asking them to take advantage of their global networks to promote the city’s image abroad.
Committee Chairman Han Seong-soo made the request while meeting with the heads of the country’s three major business groups.
In a media release Han said, “to assure more confidence from IOC members and win the bid we have to exert all we have into the efforts, including global networks from the business companies as well as support from the government”.
He added, “it is very important that all of the stakeholders, including Korean businesses, continue to work together to ensure that we produce the strongest possible bid for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, striving to create an amazing experience for the athletes, Olympic Family, media, sponsors and spectators. We welcome the full support of the key business industry leaders”.
Kang Sin-ho, Chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries said, “PyeongChang’s bid for the 2014 Games is a top priority for the people of Korea. We, the business circle, are fully committed to supporting the bid”.
Meanwhile residents of Gangwon Province have been holding several events in support of the bid. Wednesday about 20,000 residents of the province participated in a 318 km relay race from the northern point of the province to the coast of the East Sea in Gangneung to promote the bid. Other activities included traditional music and ceremonies.
At the end of the month more than 200 elected councillors will run a relay through the 18 districts of the province to demonstrate their support of the bid, while 3,000 residents of Jungbong, where the downhill skiing venue would be, raised funds for the bid and delivered a large banner petition.
From February 6 to 9 young supporters of the bid, including those with disabilities, will take part in a 100 km walking tour along a route from PyeongChang to Gangneung.
