Pyeongchang 2010 Optimistic About Bid

Officials of Pyeongchang’s 2010 Olympic Bid Committee still remain positive about the city’s chances to host the 2010 Winter Olympic bid.

Bid official Kim Pok-jin, told The Korea Times, “the committee is optimistic about the results which will come on Wednesday. But nobody knows what will happen”.

Pyeongchang is in the mountainous eastern province of Kangwon, 180 kilometres from Seoul. The city has hosted Alpine World Cup ski races in 1998 and 2000.

When asked about reports that Asia might stand little chance to win the bid after China was awarded the 2008 Summer Games, Kim said, “it depends on the IOC’s standards”.

He added, “the IOC has not done on-site inspections this time to select the three to five cities. So they should decide based on the 22-point questionnaire that the bidding committee already handed in on May 31. As long as the IOC selects the cities based on the report, we are sure to be selected as Pyeongchang meets the IOC’s standards”.
