Gong Ro-myung, President of the Pyeongchang bid committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, said he is confident of Pyeongchang’s bid.
He said, “I know the name value of Pyeongchang is inferior to those of the competing cities, but I am confident to host it due to several convincing aspects”.
He cited the sponsorship of Samsung, and said that he expected “at least 30 IOC committee members” would vote for Pyeongchang.
Kangwon Governor Kim Jin-sun said “the most important factor, affecting the IOC’s decision, will be the local residents’ ardent wish to host the Games”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) conducted surveys in July on the three bid countries and South Korea had the highest percentage of support at 78 per cent.
Kim said, “if we can host the Winter Olympics, the central government will invest in $3.18 billion to build the infrastructure such as sporting facilities and the 120-kilometre-long railroad between Wonju and Kangnung providing critical momentum for the development of the province”.
The IOC inspection team will be arriving in Pyeongchang on Feb. 13 to conduct a four-day tour of the city.
