Pyeonchang Hopes 2010 Bid Promotes Peace

Pyeonchang South Korea is one of four cities that remain on the IOC short list for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The Pyeonchang organizing committee officials believe hosting the Olympic Games will play a key role in boosting reconciliation between North and South Korea.

Committee spokesman Ji Sung-Sup told Agence France-Presse, “peace is our catchphrase. The event, if held in a divided province of a divided country, will greatly promote international peace”.

In a recent cabinet meeting President Kim Dae-Jung called for full support for Pyeongchang’s bid. The National Assembly has also adopted a resolution pledging support.

The IOC has warned in a report that the city will have to make major changes if it is to have a serious chance when the vote is taken by the full IOC membership at its Congress in Prague in July next year.

South Korean organizers said the report did not fully reflect their master plan to turn Pyeongchang into a “perfect” place for winter Games.
