Ontario Premier Mike Harris called the redevelopment of Toronto’s waterfront a critical part of the city’s Olympic dream. The Premier said the federal and provincial governments should work together to reach specific deals on redevelopment before 2001.
Harris said, “I personally believe that a commitment as ironclad as we can make it, that waterfront development will proceed, is an important part of winning the Olympic bid”. He added that a proposed $12 billion overhaul of the harbour area and the Olympic bid “are intertwined”. “I would like to see us get as much in the way of environmental assessment approvals, commitments for funding and dollars in place before 2001, when we go to Moscow”, said Harris.
A decision as to what city will host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games will be made in Moscow in July 2001.
