Project “Olympic River” Kicks In If Moscow Hosts 2012 Games

If Moscow wins the bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games Moscow’s deputy mayor Valery Shantsev told reporters Friday that a river fleet will be built. The project is called “Olympic River”.

Shantsev said, “many sports venues are situated along the Moscow River. We plan to build the Olympic Village on the Moscow River as well”.

He added that there were 70 jetties in Moscow “which need to be repaired, but this will not be expensive. We plan to build a special Olympic fleet, naming vessels after famous Olympic champions. According to preliminary estimates the fleet’s capacity will be 60,000 to 100,000 passengers daily”, said Shantsev.

The Associated Press reports that when Shantsev was asked about revenues from holding the 2012 Games he said it was impossible to calculate it. “To calculate profits from holding the Olympic Games is the same as to predict the development of the real sector”.

According to the Associated Press Standard & Poors’ analysts think that Moscow and Madrid are expected to face the biggest problems in funding the 2012 Games. The other cities bidding for the Games are New York, Paris and London.
