Pound Says Opponents of Toronto’s Garbage Plan Wasting Their Time

International Olympic Committee vice president Dick Pound said that opponents of Toronto’s plan to ship garbage to Northern Ontario are wasting their time going to Lausanne to convince the IOC that Toronto doesn’t deserve to host the 2008 Games.

He said “when you start getting untargeted letter campaigns by calling on the Pope and the IOC, I think it diminishes (the effort).”

Pound said the IOC “makes a point of not refusing to meet with people” but he couldn’t promise that a meeting would take place. In any case, he said, the protest would have “zero effect” on Toronto’s bid, because all cities have garbage to deal with.
