According to the Toronto Star, a poll by MarkTrend released Wednesday and reported in the Vancouver Sun shows that 59 per cent of B.C. residents support Vancouver’s bid for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
But that’s less than the Ipsos-Reid poll conducted in late summer that showed less than 67 per cent supported the bid.
Bid officials have told the International Olympic Committee that more than 80 per cent of Canadians supported the bid, but the IOC polled people in Vancouver and Whistler and found there was only 62 per cent support for the bid.
Also, according to the poll 54 per cent of British Columbians said the province should hold a referendum to decide whether Vancouver should host the Games.
Although critics of Vancouver’s bid have been calling for a referendum for some time, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell has repeatedly rejected the idea.
Vancouver 2010 has been marketing its bid as Canada’s Olympic bid.
