USOC president Sandy Baldwin said she wanted the search for a permanent CEO for the U.S. Olympic Committee to replace Norman Blake, (who resigned last October after nine months on the job), wrapped up by the end of September, to help in final preparations for next year’s Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Baldwin said, “that is my goal. We have to put the organization in the position it needs to be in for Salt Lake”.
Scott Blackmun, formerly the USOC’s general counsel and senior managing director for sport resources, has been interim CEO since Blake’s departure.
Baldwin said, “we have to get the ‘interim’ off, no matter if its Scott or someone else”.
Blackmun, who accompanied Baldwin to New York for a series of meetings, had been seen as a shoo-in for the job before a full search was ordered and is still considered a top contender. He said, “the important thing is I feel really good about what we’ve accomplished. We can continue that progress. If they pick me, it will be a great honour”.
Other candidates include Barry McCaffrey, the former director of the White House office on drug policy.
