The organization bidding to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in Paris met Monday to announce the introduction of a “ground-breaking” strategic plan on transportation, venues and dates for staging the Games.
According to the plan a 28-kilometre Olympic lane will be built on the “Ring Road” boulevard to offer optimal transport conditions between venues and the Olympic Village for athletes and the greater Olympic Family.
A plan to accelerate the development of transport facilities for disabled people was also adopted during the session. The committee is aiming to have most of the metro and train stations accessible to disabled people by 2012.
Two thirds of the competition will be concentrated in two clusters in the west and north of Paris.
Inside the north cluster a “Super Dome” will be constructed, representing a symbol of the reconnection between Paris and its nearest northern suburbs, which will host the gymnastics competition.
The Eiffel Tower will become one of the centrepieces of the competition, hosting the beach volleyball tournaments and serving as the starting point for the Marathon and road trial cycling events.
The swimming leg of the triathlon will take place at the foot of the Tower in the Seine River.
If Paris wins the 2012 bid, the Olympic Games would take place July 27 to August 12, 2012 and the Paralympic Games August 29 to September 9, 2012.
