There’s a campaign underway in Sichuan Province for the panda to be the mascot of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. It seems that more than half of China’s pandas live in Sichuan Province, and the director of the panda-for-mascot campaign office says the panda is the perfect embodiment of the Olympic spirit, representing peace and harmony.
Sichuan Ouyan said, “we’ve taken note of the panda’s popularity worldwide…we think pandas are the most famous animals anywhere in the world”.
Other mascots under consideration include tigers, Tibetan antelopes, and the Monkey King. Olympic officials will announce the Beijing 2008 Mascot in June 2005.
