The Ottawa Business Journal reports that an Ottawa bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games will be considered next week at a meeting of the city’s corporate services and economic development committee. The committee is being asked to support the Ottawa 2014 Bid Committee’s interest in hosting the 2014 games, as well as a request for funding to prepare the bid.
Ottawa’s Mayor Bob Chiarelli sent a letter of intent to Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) July 21 indicating Ottawa interest in bidding, along with a $5,000 non-refundable deposit.
Other Canadian cities interested in becoming Canada’s candidate for the 2014 Commonwealth Games are Halifax, York Region, Hamilton and Calgary. The CGC will announce the Canadian bid city in December. The international phase of the process begins next April and the host city will be selected in October 2007.
Hamilton has already approved a budget of up to $400,000 to develop its domestic bid and is providing $340,000 of this amount. Halifax has agreed to fund up to 50 per cent of the Halifax bid, up to a maximum of $375,000.
