Aftenposten reports that according to a new public opinion poll conducted by Norsk Respons 64 per cent of Norwegians favoured Norway bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Fifty one per cent want Tromso to host the Games, 28 per cent voted for Oslo and only 14 per cent of respondents selected Trondheim.
But it would change if Oslo joined with Lillehammer in its bid. Lillehammer successfully hosted the Winter Games in 1994. Forty four per cent say they’d prefer an Oslo-Lillehammer bid, 32 per cent preferred Tromso and only seven percent favoured Trondheim.
Still some are concerned about Norway hosting another Olympics saying it will be too expensive, require massive investment and the lack of snow may post a problem, reports Aftenposten.
Tromso, Trondheim and Oslo will be delivering their applications to the national athletics association on February 19.
Tromso’s bid is getting the support from former Olympic cross-country skiing star Vega Ulvang who comes from Northern Norway, and Olympian Bjorn Daehlie is backing the Oslo-Lillehammer bid.
