Ontario Finally Guarantees Toronto’s 2008 Games

In the nick of time, the province of Ontario sent several letters to Toronto’s bid committee guaranteeing its support for Toronto’s 2008 bid.

The letters, an important part of Toronto’s official bid book, which is on its way to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne Switzerland, allow a media village on provincial land and guarantee that the province will do what it takes to ensure the Games go off as planned.

Mitch Patten, head of the Olympic Sports and Waterfront Development Agency said “I think we’re just about there. The work with TO-Bid on the details will be ongoing, but in terms of the guarantee it’s virtually there”.

Mike Colle, an opposition member of the provincial parliament, said that the plan is workable but several of his caucus colleagues will be looking for more details, particularly what bills Ontario taxpayers might be left to pay.
