One China If Taiwan Shares In 2008 Bid

Shao Shiwei of China’s Sports General Administration, told the China Daily that Beijing will be ready to discuss the organization of the 2008 Olympic Games with Taiwan if Tapai recognizes the “one China” principle.

Over the past several months Taiwan has repeated hopes to play a role in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Shao Shiwei said “we won’t allow anyone to use this issue to promote two Chinas…or anything detrimental to the reunification of the Chinese nation”.

China considers Taiwan a rebel province. It has demanded its new president recognize the island as part of China, but he has so far refused.

A Taiwanese sports official, Wu Ching-kuo, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee, has also suggested China and Taiwan jointly organize the Games.
