Olympic Torch Arrives In Turin

The Olympic Torch for the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games that was lit on November 27 in Olympia was delivered by the Greek Olympic Committee to the Turin 2006 organization committee Tuesday.

The short ceremony took place in the presence of Greek President Karolos Papoulias and a few hundred spectators in the Panathinaikon stadium in Athens where the first modern Olympics took place in 1896.

The torch was handed to Turin 2006 President Valentino Castellani.

After two failed attempts technicians intervened and the torch was lit.

The torch will be flown to Rome where Italy’s President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Olympic gold medallist Stefano Baldini will receive it on December 8 and 10,001 torchbearers will carry the torch through all the Italian provinces and 140 cities.
