Olympic Digest – Chicago 2016, Vancouver 2010

What do the Queen of England and Oprah Winfrey have in common? Both are to attend Olympic functions. The Chronicle Herald reports that Queen Elizabeth will be in Vancouver February 12 to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Chicago 2016 revealed Thursday that Oprah Winfrey will join the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Evaluation Commission at an exclusive dinner Monday at Chicago’s Art Institute. Chicago 2016 Vice Chairman Mike Roberts said in the Chicago Tribune, “when you think about who’re really leading this bid you think about our president. You have the greatest mayor in America. You have the most influential person in the world, if you will, and that’s Oprah Winfrey. She will be part of our dinner Monday night”.

Meanwhile the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved a new logo for Hockey Canada to use on its 2010 Winter Olympic jerseys. Details of the exact design haven’t been revealed, but the jersey will incorporate the logo of the Vancouver 2010 Games, which is an inukshuk hovering over the five Olympic rings. The final design submitted by Hockey Canada to the IOC was the fifth attempt at finding a compromise to the rule that national federations aren’t allowed to display their logo at the Games.
