The Royal Canadian Mint Wednesday officially released the second Olympic 25-cent circulation coin of 2008. The sport of freestyle skiing is depicted on the coin, which is the seventh of 17 circulation coins of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
The coin is designed by Canadian artist Glenn Green of Vancouver British Columbia and features a freestyle skier in the centre, a stylized maple leaf and the words “Vancouver 2010”. The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Up to 22 million 25-cent freestyle skiing coins will go into circulation Wednesday and will be available exclusively at RBC Royal Bank and participating Petro-Canada gas stations. RBC is a Premier National Partner and Petro-Canada is a National Partner of Vancouver 2010.
The newest Olympic Winter Games event, Freestyle Ski Cross, will make its debut at the Vancouver 2010 Games where both men and women will compete in all three freestyle disciplines.
Meanwhile London 2012 organizers have named a new canoeing and kayak slalom venue after the original site was abandoned because of high levels of contamination, reports Reuters.
According to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) the new location in Broxbourne has been approved by the International Canoe Federation, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the British Olympic Association.
The centre is six miles closer to the main Olympic Park in east London than the original site and would serve as a recreational and competition facility after the Games end. The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority would manage it.
