New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday at New York’s City Hall, “at the moment we have no plans to bid for an Olympics. I do not believe that the opportunities that we had when the 2012 bid was put together will exist for a 2016 bid”.
One of the problems New York has once again is the Olympic Stadium. Bloomberg said, “there is no source that I know of to build a stadium. There is no place to put a stadium that would make it attractive to the IOC members. When you make a bid in the Olympics, it’s not what’s attractive to the host city. It’s what’s attractive to the IOC members who bid”.
The New York Mets now have a new stadium out of a revised Olympic bid plan. They are responsible for the construction costs. But Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon has said that the design plans now probably wouldn’t allow for an Olympic retrofit.
Bloomberg said, “I think anybody that looked at this once the West Side stadium plan fell apart, everybody understood we did not have a chance to win. We gave it our best shot”.
